Fish oil pills are big business. In fact sales of fish oil pills, or what can be known as Omega 3 capsules or even as omega 3 supplements, are growing faster than any other nutritional supplement in history. Lets have a look at why and consider whether you should also be taking daily supplements of omega 3.
There are 2 primary omega 3 essential fatty acids called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). These are good fats and contrary to what you might have been told about fat in your diet, getting plenty of DHA and EPA is good for you.
There are some bad fats, in particular saturated fat which is primarily found in animal products such as red meat and chicken. However there are also good fats which are extremely important to your health. The omega 3 fatty acids called essential fatty acids are extremely important to your health and are not manufactured in your body. Therefore the only way you can get Omega 3 fatty acids into you is by taking oil fish pills, or eating a lot of fish.
Estimates are that the vast majority of people in the US have way too little essential fatty acids in their diet. Studies have shown that populations of people who eat lots of fish are healthier, and in particular have better heart health than so many of our citizens and studies have linked this good heart health to their high intake of fish and other seafood products.
There’s a wide range of health benefits from increasing your intake of essential fatty acids. These health benefits include improvments in heart health and these are now recognized by the American Heart Association which recommends minimum intakes of DHA and EPA for each of us every week. They suggest eating more fish or else taking Omega 3 capsules.
The heart health benefits of Omega3 fats include a reduced risk of death. This is a result of better heart health, lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and less plaque in our arteries. And it doesn’t stop there. Higher intakes of Omega3 fats improve brain function and memory, reduce the incidence and effects of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and reduce the risks of blindness by macular degeneration in older age, and more.
Studies show that DHA, the most important omega 3 fatty acid, is an essential part of the brain development of the fetus and that pregnant women should ensure an adequate intake of Omega3 fats throughout pregnancy. Equally it is important for women who are breastfeeding to maintain her intake of Omega3 fats as these fats are made available to the infant through the milk, and brain development throughout childhood equally relies on an adequate supply of DHA. In fact studies show that children raised with adequate levels of Omega3 fats do better on IQ tests.
It is quite clear that we need more DHA and EPA in our diets, but how? Of course we can all eat more fish but fish is very expensive and only certain types of fish, namely oily fish, have high levels of Omega3 fats. Fish is generally contaminated with toxins and the FDA tells us to limit our intake of fish for this reason.
Omega 3 pills are the ideal solution. They are capsules of fish oil which you can take everyday, and you can cut the top off and poor the oil onto the kids breakfast if they can’t take the capsules. They are cost effective and the best fish oil pills are contamination free.
But there are wide variations in the amount of DHA, the most important Omega 3 fat, in the different omega 3 supplements available and it’s difficult to compare one brand of supplements with another.
For some time I have been giving fish oil pills to my family and taking them myself with my breakfast. I buy the fish oil pills that I consider to be the worlds best. To find out which Omega 3 supplements I consider to be the best visit my website.

I’ve been taking Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules for a long time, to me it seems pretty obvious, and the evidence is overwhelming, that our diet is too low in omega 3 fatty acids and we need to introduce more of them in our diet. And the evidence also seems clear to me that our health is directly linked to the level of Omega3 fats in our diet.
But I recently spoke to a friend who told me he would never consider taking supplements. He told me that he considered that taking Omega 3 supplements was unproven and was not mainstream medicine. So I thought I’d discuss that.
Because there seems to be the perception that dietary supplements are a bit of voodoo, something that makes money for the people who make them, but quite unnecessary.
And it also seems that there are lots of people who consider that dietary supplementation is somehow alternative and that the mainstream medical profession do not recognise it’s value. That real people won’t take them.
So lets consider whether there are down to earth recognized medical authorities that recommend the intake of Omega 3 oils and fats and recognize the Benefits Of Omega 3.
Lets start with the American Heart Association.
The AHA says that “Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of , or who have, cardiovascular disease.
The AHA recommends that we eat at least 2 servings of fish a week and other foods high in omega 3 fats.
And they also make some very specific suggestions for people with CHD, or coronary heart disease. They should eat at least 1 gram of EPA and DHA per day, and for those who need to lower their triglycerides its suggested that they take from 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA as capsules, doctor supervised.
It’s harder to get much clearer than that. The AHA recommends the intake of omega 3 fats, preferably as food but also as capsules, every day.
Of course a dietary change can help to increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. But it isn’t always quite as easy to take in enough good fats by diet alone, and I’ll give you an example of why.
You can get Omega 3 oils in meat. Good old beef and lamb. But that only applies to grass fed beef and lamb because grass fed beef and lamb have a reasonable level of Omega3 fatty acids but grain fed beef and lamb does not. And ours is grain fed.
As you can see it’s not that easy getting plenty of Omega 3 essential fatty acids into our diet and that’s why so many studies have concluded that our diet falls far short of the level of Omega3 fatty acid intake for good health.
And if you’re one of those who say that Omega 3 supplementation is not accepted by the mainstream medical profession then remember the AHA. They’re pretty mainstream. They certainly don’t consider Omega 3 supplementation be something alternative and not acceptable to medicine.
